Define categories to which ratings can be applied.

Core Concepts

Types of Categories

Standard

A definable category with definable options that can be chosen from a dropdown by a user:

  • Construction type
    • Frame
    • Masonry
  • Occupancy
    • Owner occupied
    • Tenant occupied
  • Number of families
    • 1
    • 2
    • 3

This category allows a default to be explicitly set. The default value is selected by the system when an agent or staff member builds a new policy. For example, offering a $500, $1000, and $2500 deductible while setting the $1000 as the default will result in the $1000 deductible being selected when building a policy.

If no default is identified, the category will default to the first option in the list. The default option takes precedence over the Blank Category Default setting in Settings > Modules > Lines > Options.

Age

Used specifically to determine the age of a dwelling. Each year, this category automatically increments by 1.

When a policy is on its last available number when the policy renews, the line item will be removed from the policy and the policy automatically committed. That is, there will be no indication the line item was dropped. At present, the age category maximum is 200 years. If dwellings older than 190 years are insured, consider funding a feature to increase the age category maximum.

This category also allows a default to be explicitly set. The default value is selected when an agent or staff member builds a new policy.

If no default is identified, the category will default to the first option in the list. The default option takes precedence over the Blank Category Default setting in Settings > Modules > Lines > Options.

Zip Code

Pulls from the zip codes associated with your Settings > System Wide > Business Locations. Learn more about the database used for determining zip codes.

Limit of Selected Item

References the limit of another line item.

Location Code

References counties and county specifications defined in Settings > System Wide > Business Locations. When a risk address is entered on a policy, the county and, if applicable, county specification values pull automatically into the policy rating.

Credit Tier

After retrieving a credit score via a vendor integration, this category pulls customizable credit tier information from the Label area of Settings > Vendors > ISO Credit Scoring or LexisNexis Credit Scoring.

Learn more about credit score setups using ISO or LexisNexis.

Deductible

References the deductible of another line item.

Years Since Last Claim Made

Defines how far into the past a claim should be referenced.

If no claim exists, the category will default to Not Applicable.

Number of Claims

Defines how many filed claims should be referenced.

BriteCore Setup

Adding a Category

To add a category, an effective date, line of business, policy type, and line item must already exist:

  1. Navigate to Lines > Effective Date > Policy Type > Line item
  2. Click the line item's pencil
  3. Open the Setup box
  4. Check the Line item has a rate and/or a deductible box
  5. Scroll down to the Rating box
  6. Open the Rating box
  7. Click + Add to Chain
  8. Select Categories from the Rate Object dropdown
  9. In the Chain Details section, click the gray arrow next in the Rate Categories row
  10. Click + Add a Category
  11. Select a Category Type from among the options discussed above
  12. Build the category using the remaining information on this page

Dec Order

By default, the order of categories on the Declaration's Rating Information section will be the order they are built in the Lines module. However, this default can be overwritten by explicitly defining the order.

Hide/Show/Disable in BriteQuote

Hide, show, or disable the category from agents:

  • Hide means the agent cannot see the category on the screen
  • Show means the agent can see and update the category
  • Disable means the agent can see but cannot update the category

Hiding and disabling a category is not compatible with the Blank Category Default option in Settings > Modules > Lines > Options. When both settings are enabled, BriteCore will default category dropdowns to none-selected and prevent the agent from rating the policy.

Determines whether the category and its selected value appear in the Rating Information section of the Declaration. If this is unchecked, then the Dec Order setting above is not needed.

Category is Selected by a Lookup

Allows a category to be broken into smaller pieces for reference.

Synchronize this Category Value Across Line Items

Allows the reuse of the category across line items where the value will update on all associated items when changed.

Message Popup for Builder

Creates a clickable icon on the screen and displays information typed into the text input box.
